CRIK:Allegations could 'taint' Aussie efforts

HOBART, Aug 30 AAP - Australian captain Ricky Ponting fears some great individual performances
by his players will be "tainted" if allegations of cheating by Pakistan rivals are proven.

Australia's remarkable come-from-behind victory against Pakistan in Sydney in January
has been brought into question by allegations of fixing against Pakistan during their
just-completed Test series against England.

The alleged fixer was reportedly videoed in a British newspaper sting boasting that
the Sydney Test was rigged.

Ponting said he had no suspicions about the game at the time but admitted he'd been
forced to wonder since.

"Not at the time, no, I had no idea about anything like that at all," Ponting told
ABC Radio on Monday.

"The way we won was one of the more satisfying moments that I've had on the cricket field.

"And now when some of these things come to light is when you start to slightly doubt
some of the things that have happened. It's not up to us to worry about that anyway."

Ponting said he was concerned the fixing allegations could overshadow the efforts of
some of his players.

"The thing that I'm most worried about if any of this is proven to be true is some
of the individual performances that took place in that game," he said.

"You look at Mike Hussey's second innings hundred and Peter Siddle's batting and the
way he was with Mike Hussey that day and Nathan Hauritz taking five wickets on the final
day to win us the game.

"All of those individual milestones will be tainted as well."

Fed: Security a major concern at APEC

AAP General News (Australia)
12-24-2006
Fed: Security a major concern at APEC

By Nick Butterly and Sandra O'Malley

CANBERRA, AAP - Australians were shocked by the scenes of violence at this year's G20
meeting in Melbourne.

Protesters, drawn together to air their anger at issues ranging from the war in Iraq
to globalisation, fought battles with police on the perimeters of the conference, resulting
in injuries on both sides and many arrests.

Most were not intent on trouble, but a small number of well-organised radicals managed
to hijack the protests, goading police into using force in a series of confrontations.

These tactics likely will be repeated at next year's Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation
(APEC) meeting in Sydney in September, perhaps on an even larger scale.

Australia's chief spy, ASIO director general Paul O'Sullivan, admitted as much during
a security conference in Sydney earlier this month.

Mr O'Sullivan said while terrorism remained a real fear, the more likely threat came
from violent protesters, some of whom may come from overseas to take part in the violence.

"Certainly in the context of the APEC meetings and events we can expect to see large-scale
protests on a range of issues, including anti-globalisation, the environment and climate
change, the Iraq war and a number of other matters," Mr O'Sullivan said.

"While the threat of protest action in connection with APEC is certain ... there is
also an overarching and persistent threat of terrorism which inevitably has an impact
in the conduct of events such as APEC, either in general or directed at some of the individual
leaders."

Mr O'Sullivan said the agency was expected to carry out 30,000 accreditation checks
for APEC as part of attempts to keep troublemakers out of Australia.

"These individuals and groups actually plan for violent protest and seek to develop
tactics that will bring them into conflict with police and other authorities.

"They also seek to involve others in their activities with a view to causing widespread
disruption and havoc to events or individuals whose views they oppose."

Security costs are expected to gobble up almost half of the anticipated $300 million
price tag for the summit.

As part of preparations, the federal Attorney-General's Department has overseen a series
of security exercises involving state government branches and specialist police units
and the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

As in Melbourne, large parts of Sydney's central business district will be sealed off,
keeping the public kilometres away from officials and world leaders.

And in a unprecedented move, Sydney residents will be given a one-off public holiday
the day before the meeting to help authorities secure the city centre the day before the
forum begins.

While the focus of APEC is on the leaders summit on September 8 and 9, it will be the
culmination of more than 20 meetings of ministers, senior officials and business leaders
throughout Australia and New Zealand over the year.

The schedule of more than 100 days of meetings begins in Canberra next month with a
senior officials meeting which will set the APEC agenda running over nearly two weeks.

That event alone is expected to attract up to 1,700 delegates.

The grouping of Asia Pacific economies has grown from 12 to 21 members and still manages
to hold a level of influence among a myriad of new regional organisations because of the
inclusion of the United States.

Prime Minister John Howard seems set to host the 20 other world leaders, including
US President George W Bush, Russian President Vladamir Putin and Chinese President Hu
Jintao as one of his last official engagements before heading to the polls later in the
year - showing his credentials as an international statesman.

Australia has signalled climate change and energy security will be some of its key
focuses as host nation.

And if the current round of Doha trade talks can't be resurrected, APEC is likely to
start seriously exploring the concept of a free trade area for the Asia Pacific region.

However, even if APEC leaders agree to move forward on a regional trade pact, some
believe it could be more than a decade and a half before such an agreement could be finalised.

With so much of the world's focus on Australia, groups like those that caused so much
trouble in Melbourne will be eager to do even more damage in Sydney.

Qld: Fewer public servants accessing porn at work - Beattie

BRISBANE, April 4 AAP - Fewer Queensland public servants were accessing pornography
at work, Premier Peter Beattie said today.

Mr Beattie said a new report showed the hardline stance he took against pornography
was achieving positive results.

So far in 2004/05, 16 public servants had been found accessing pornography on their
work computers, "plummeting" from 57 in 2003/04, he said.

"I will not tolerate people accessing pornography at work. It's totally unacceptable
and in most cases, anyone guilty of this will be sacked," Mr Beattie said in a statement.

He said seven of the 16 public servants were either sacked or disciplined, three resigned,
five were still under investigation, and one had provided a reasonable explanation so
no further action was taken.

"The ones who are a problem are in a very small minority and they are warned: they
will be caught," Mr Beattie said.

The report's release followed claims last week that security guards were downloading
pornography on public works computers.

CELESTE selects Tellabs for nationwide fiber optic network.

1Gb/s Internet connection for enterprises in France

HIGH WYCOMBE, United Kingdom, June 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- French Broadband Internet Service Provider CELESTE is responding to very high bandwidth demand from business customers. To achieve this, the company is rapidly expanding its high performance and high bandwidth fiber optic network to all major cities in France. CELESTE has selected Tellabs to exclusively provide the nationwide optical transport network.

The operator is deploying the Tellabs 7100 Nano(TM) Optical Transport System (OTS) to offer new and existing customers a wider range of services with more bandwidth, more reliability and more cost-effective services.

A new nationwide network for enterprise customers

CELESTE is building a nationwide fiber optic network which will stretch over 4,000 kilometers around France. The network will extend its high-bandwidth services to new French regional markets and reach more enterprises. The easily deployed Tellabs 7100 Nano enables CELESTE to build the fiber optic network quickly and cost-effectively, aiming to complete deployment within 18 months.

Currently, CELESTE uses a traditional telecom network, serving around 2,000 customers. Once complete, CELESTE's nationwide high-capacity network will reach from Paris to all major cities across France, including Lille, Nantes, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Marseille, Lyon and Strasbourg.

"CELESTE's emergence as a nationwide competitor is a major revolution for the French broadband market," said Nicolas Aube, President of CELESTE. "With this deployment, medium size enterprises across France can access competitively priced, high-bandwidth services quickly and easily. Tellabs' extensive knowledge and experience of international enterprise markets is an invaluable part of our success in this ambitious venture."

Fast network deployment enables CELESTE to act quickly

The fully scalable and flexible Tellabs 7100 Nano OTS enables CELESTE to rapidly introduce new services to enterprises across the country. The network will initially consist of ROADM-based, multi-channel nodes, and Optical Line Amplifier nodes. The cost-effective Tellabs packet-optical solution is designed to scale with CELESTE as its service and bandwidth needs grow over time.

"CELESTE needed a partner that could rapidly deliver high quality infrastructure and support its aggressive deployment targets," said Tarcisio Ribeiro, vice president and general manager, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Tellabs. "Tellabs delivered a fast deployment, and offered a cost-effective solution that can scale with CELESTE and its customers as the volume of traffic on the network increases."

According to data from Tellabs customers, a Tellabs 7100 Nano OTS solution can reduce capital expenses by up to 65 percent and operating expenses by as much as 85 percent.

BIN LADEN IS GONE, BUT TERRORIST THREAT REMAINS.

WASHINGTON -- The following information was released by Maine Senator Susan Collins:

Weekly Column by Senator Susan Collins

May 9, 2011

Washington, DC - Shortly after 10 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, I checked my Blackberry and found an urgent message to call the White House Situation Room. My first thought was that there had been a terrorist attack or a thwarted terrorist plot. I did not expect the astonishing news that I received from the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center: that Osama bin Laden had been killed in a U.S. military operation. The architect of the attacks on our country that took the lives of nearly 3,000 people on September 11, 2001, and the mastermind and inspiration for so much violence before and since, had been brought to justice.

In the nearly 10 years since the attacks of 9-11-01, the men and women of our intelligence agencies never gave up in their relentless pursuit of this mass murderer. I am grateful to the Navy SEALS who carried out this daring operation with such incredible skill and courage. Our national security leaders worked as a seamless team, and President Obama made a gutsy decision to authorize the strike using the Navy SEALS rather than bombing the complex. The intelligence reforms that helped analysts to piece together the trail to Osama bin Laden were initiated during President Bush's Administration.

The members of our intelligence, military, and homeland security communities deserve high praise for never giving up in their pursuit of bin Laden. As a leader of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, it has been a privilege to work with these dedicated professionals to reverse the lack of coordination within the U.S. Government that prevented the 9/11 attack from being detected. The operation against bin Laden demonstrated the crucial importance of sharing intelligence information across agency boundaries, as directed by the intelligence reform legislation Senator Joe Lieberman and I authored in 2004. The agency silos that once kept information from being shared have been turned into avenues for communication.

Since 9/11, we have made great efforts to bring all levels of government together to better protect our nation. As a result, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI took actions immediately after the announcement of bin Laden's death to coordinate with and disseminate intelligence information to state and local homeland security and law enforcement officials, and to urge them to be especially vigilant.

The bin Laden presence in a Pakistani city raises serious questions about the commitment of the government of Pakistan to fighting terrorism. It defies belief that no one within Pakistan's military and intelligence agencies knew anything of the whereabouts of the most infamous terrorist, even though he was living in a massive compound less than a mile from Pakistan's national military academy. Everything about the compound in the city of Abbottabad - its huge size, the high walls topped with barbed wire, the lack of telephone or internet service, the fact that trash was burned on-site rather than being hauled away - should have made it obvious that someone was hiding there.

This is not to say that officials at the highest levels of the Pakistani government knew bin Laden was there, but it seems very likely that some elements within the country's security apparatus had to know. Pakistan has been an inconsistent ally, and many questions must now be asked and answered about the billions in aid that we provide to the country.

Following bin Laden's death, there have been calls for retaliation against Americans by Islamic extremists. Earlier this week, I urged the Secretary of Homeland Security to increase the threat level, at least for the next two weeks, while an intelligence assessment is conducted of the data seized from Osama bin Laden's compound and as a precautionary measure given the possibility of a retaliatory attack. I continue to question the Secretary's decision not to increase the threat level.

The raid on bin Laden's compound yielded computers and disks that must be thoroughly reviewed. I am hopeful that these materials will prove to be a treasure trove of information about Al Qaeda's plots and operatives. The elevated threat level would provide additional protection while our intelligence experts assess the current status on bin Laden's terrorist network.

The world is a safer place without Osama bin Laden, but the war against terror is not over. Our government must continue to use every asset at our disposal to detect, and if necessary, thwart, any attack. As the successful operation against bin Laden so clearly proved, no asset is greater than American resolve.

Ku6 Media Reports Unaudited Financial Results for First Quarter of Fiscal Year 2011.(Financial report)

BEIJING, May 24, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Ku6 Media Co., Ltd., ("Ku6 Media" or the "Company", Nasdaq: KUTV) a leading internet television company in China, today announced its unaudited financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2011.

Background

In 2010, Ku6 Media (formerly known as Hurray!) completed a series of transaction including acquisition of Ku6 in January 2010 and disposal of its WVAS and music businesses to Shanda Interactive Entertainment Limited ("Shanda") as well as acquisition of online audio business from Shanda in August 2010, and became a company focusing on online advertising business on its online video platform of www.Ku6.com. As a result, the operating results of WVAS and recorded music were presented as "Operating Results of Discontinued Operations" in the income statements. In addition, the results of operations for the first quarter of 2011 and the fourth quarter of 2010 may not be entirely comparable to those for the first quarter of 2010, which included the consolidated operating results of Ku6 for the two months after the acquisition was completed in January 2010 only.

First Quarter 2011 Highlights

* Total revenues from continuing operations were $6.6 million, up 178.5% from $2.4 million in the first quarter of 2010, and slight down 3.0% from $6.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2010.

* Net loss from continuing operations was $10.9 million, an increase of 9.9% from a loss of $9.9 million in the first quarter of 2010, and a decrease of 29.6% from a loss of $15.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Business results

Total revenues from continuing operations, representing advertising revenue from online video portal and online radio operation, were $6.6 million in the first quarter of 2011, representing a slight decrease of 3.0% from $6.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2010 and an increase of 178.5% from $2.4 million in the first quarter of 2010. In the first quarter of 2011, the top five brand advertisers that have advertized on Ku6's website are GM, HTC, Lenovo, P&G, and Taobao.

Gross loss from continuing operations was $2.4 million in the first quarter of 2011, down 58.4% from $5.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2010 and down 46.3% from $4.4 million in the first quarter of 2010. Gross loss narrowed in the first quarter of 2011 as compared to the first and fourth quarters of 2010 mostly due to the decrease in operating cost as a result of cost control efforts by the Company.

Operating expenses from continuing operations were $9.1 million in the first quarter of 2011, down 7.1% from $9.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2010 and up 65.0% from $5.5 million in the first quarter of 2010.

Operating loss from continuing operations was $11.4 million in the first quarter of 2011, a decrease of 26.0% from $15.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2010 and an increase of 15.4% from $9.9 million in the first quarter of 2010.

Net loss from continuing operations was $10.9 million in the first quarter of 2011, a decrease of 29.6% from the loss of $15.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2010 and an increase of 9.9% from the loss of $9.9 million in the first quarter of 2010.

Net loss from discontinued operations (WVAS and recorded music businesses) was nil in the first quarter of 2011 and the fourth quarter of 2010 since the WVAS and recorded music businesses were sold in August 2010, as compared to $1.2 million of net loss in the first quarter of 2010.

Net loss attributable to Ku6 Media was $10.8 million in the first quarter of 2011, as compared to $15.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2010 and $10.9 million in the first quarter of 2010.

Net loss attributable to Ku6 Media per basic and diluted ADS was $0.31 in the first quarter of 2011, compared to $0.44 in the fourth quarter of 2010 and $0.39 in the first quarter of 2010. Weighted average ADS used to calculate diluted net loss per ADS was 34.8 million ADS in the first quarter of 2011, 34.8 million ADS in the fourth quarter of 2010 and 27.9 million ADS in the first quarter of 2010.

Loss before interest expense and interest income, income taxes, depreciation, and amortization ("EBITDA", a non-GAAP measure) was $9.4 million in the first quarter of 2011, compared to $13.8million in the fourth quarter of 2010 and $10.0 million in the first quarter of 2010. Reconciliation between net loss attributable to Ku6 Media under U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and EBITDA is presented at the end of this news release.

As of March 31, 2011, the Company had $17.2 million in cash and cash equivalents, compared to $27.3 million as of December 31, 2010.

Mr. Haifa Zhu, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Ku6 Media, commented, "Ku6 Media has continued to make progress in the first quarter of 2011. Facing the future opportunities and challenges, management will actively take various measures to solidify our leading positions in technology and content, to further improve user experience, to optimize cost structure, and to improve operation efficiency. After the completions of the cash infusion, the merger with Pipi and the restructuring of our sales department, we believe that we will be in a better competitive position in Chinese online video market, and will continuously improve our financial performance."

Recent Business Activities

On April 1, 2011, the Company announced that it had agreed to issue to Shanda ordinary shares and convertible bonds in an aggregate amount of US$100,000,000. The Company agreed to issue to Shanda US$50,000,000 of ordinary shares of Ku6 Media at a per share price of US$0.0325 (or US$3.25 per ADS), representing a 1.0% discount to the average closing price during the 15 consecutive trading days, immediately prior to April 1, 2011, and US$50,000,000 aggregate principal amount of 3% senior convertible notes at face value. The bonds will mature in three years after issuance and will bear an interest of 3% per annum, payable semi-annually. The bonds will be convertible into ordinary shares of Ku6 Media at a price of US$0.03925 per ordinary share (or US$3.925 per ADS), representing a 19.6% premium to the average closing price during the 15 consecutive trading days, immediately prior to April 1, 2011. The conversion rights will start after 6 months following the closing date. The transaction is subject to the approval by the shareholders of the Company at a special shareholders meeting to be convened on May 26, 2011. Closing is expected to occur in the second quarter of 2011. The Company intends to use the net proceeds from the sale of the convertible bonds and the issuance of ordinary shares for business expansion, working capital and other general corporate purposes.

On April 20, 2011, the Company announced that Ku6 Media and the shareholders of Hangzhou Soushi Networking Co., Ltd. ("Pipi"), a leading P2P based internet video platform in China, have agreed to the sale of Pipi to the Company, in an all stock transaction under which all of the equity interests in Pipi will be sold to the Company in exchange for an aggregate of 2,212,114,257 Ku6 Media ordinary shares. After the completion of the merger, Pipi will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Company. Completion of the share purchase will be subject to the condition that the shareholders of the Company approve the issuance of ordinary shares of Ku6 Media to the shareholders of Pipi at a special shareholders meeting to be convened on May 26, 2011. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2011.

On May 18, 2011, the Company announced that, as part of its strategies to streamline operations, manage costs and improve efficiency, it plans to restructure its sales department. After the restructuring, the Company expects to maintain a smaller but more efficient sales team and to adopt various measures to enhance sales performance. Such measures will include outsourcing some of its sales efforts to third-party advertising agencies and exploring more effective sales channels. The restructuring will reduce the Company's total workforce by approximately 20% and all employees affected are from the sales department. The Company plans to complete the restructuring within two weeks from the announcement. The Company expects that a $1.0 million non-recurring restructuring charge will be recorded in the second quarter of 2011, and its revenues in the second and third quarters of 2011 will be negatively affected by the restructuring; however, the Company also expects an expense reduction of $1.5 million to $2 million per quarter can be achieved, and the improved sales efficiency and effectiveness resulting from the restructuring will enhance long-term shareholder value.
